Found it a fun assembly and a good base to start adding all the optional upgraded HD parts. VERY easy to follow instructions and everything fit perfect and I had zero problems. Took around 5-6 hours total to assemble. It fits the Bronco body perfect and easy enough to modify to fit the Defender and Tactical bodies.
The real question would be, if I had it to do over would I do it again ? That would be a big yes.
I DID do my "homework" on this kit before I bought it. Watched a full build on U-Tube along with reading other reviews on the kit. The 24t output gear and the bearing DID fit on mine (although I purchase an extra gear just incase) and added it to my spare parts bin after not needing it. Also added the all metal gear upgrade kit to the transmission.
IF I was going to complain about anything, I would have liked Traxxas to have added an extra tube of HD grease for the gears. Didn't quite agree with just a dab on each gear. I used a compatible marine grease that was safe for plastic and has a wide temperature range from below zero to over 100 degree F.
Built it bashed it all stock for now but I must say it was fun to build except for one gear in the trans needed to be dremeled out for a bearing to fit in it other than that its a nice kit
Everything went together well directions are good
The shocks are great when built properly some of the smoothest ive ever had even over my prolines
I'm running a scx10.2 cherokee body and it fits perfectly
Id recommend this kit to intermediate builders as the directions can be confusing
Very well built kit, all plastic components very sturdy. Kit went together well. Only downside is that it is very specific on what traxxas body you can use without doing what I did and spend a bunch of extra money on buying more parts just to make the sport body work. Only uses bronco or blazer body...
Great kit. Very disappointed in the amount of time it took to receive my order. Ended up buying the same item directly from traxxas. So now you have two.
Built this last year. No problems with assembly or parts. Great kit with included items and just upgraded body from tactical to defender.
purchased thru amain very happy with the purchase showed up at my door in just a few days, am very pleased with the product and the whole transaction process, the trx4 assembly kit is the best kit I have ever built. my next purchase will be the traxxas maxx and will be ordering thru amain again :)
The kit has good instructions and was easy to assemble. I’m only giving it a 4 star rating due to the kit missing one bearing and having an extra of another size.
Have had most Traxxas cars and trucks love them all this is first kit from TRAXXAS and the build was simple had a good time building and before build bought all upgrades now its time to play PS only thing I don't like are the Traxxas plugs first is the plugs are not simple someone who can't solder good will have problems where the Dean(T) connecter does not need assembly just solder wire to terminal and go ..anybody who can't build this toy should not give a bad review it just means your not a builder a should only buy ready to run and leave building to the mechanics
Somewhat of a complicated build for someone who has never built one before. Took me 14 hours to put together. Another three trying to get the hydraulic shocks close to right. Shipping was on time and package was in good condition upon arrival. The kit was missing a couple of screws and I received an extra bearing which worried me enough to disassemble and then reassemble both axles AND transmission just to make sure I didn’t miss a bearing somewhere, so that was an hour wasted. All in all, it was totally worth every cent and second spent!
Wow....awesome right off the bench after assembly. Put a chevy stepside body on it. Portal axles make these stand alone in my opinion. Changed 2 a slightly longer shock for an additional 12mm total twist per axle w no problems and added a little weight at battery tray and front most tray to keep nose down in the steep. Only complaint is steering servo quit after 4 runs..protek and external BEC added. These climb like goats
Excellent Kit !!!, my second TRX4 which I decided to build as a hobby and distraction option.
I have been doing RC cars for over three years and own over 30 vehicles of all scales (1/10th all the way down to 1/28th), but this was my first ever build. I chose this kit because it comes with all of the electronics, motor, and transmitter. Most kits cost this much or more and then you still need to drop a couple hundred more dollars for the electronics. Couple that with the fact that I know Traxxas parts can be bought anywhere, and it was an easy decision to make.
The instructions were clear and contain detailed pictures to guide you. Inside the box, each step of assembly is its own bag, so you just open the bag, assemble that part and use all the pieces, then open a new bag. It is so user friendly! The final product is a quality and capable rock crawler. I definitely recommend for newbies.
Great truck, fun to build, and my first crawler.. You need to really pay attention to each step for orientation of parts, etc. Several times I had to disassemble and reassemble due to me missing a detail in a step, which can be frustrating at times. I had no issues with missing parts or non-fitting parts. I wanted to use the sport body, but also have the locking diffs and two speed trans, so I also purchased the sport shock towers and body mounts - about $25-30 for the parts. Really pleased with the way it turned out.
This was my first Kit and it wen together well! The instructions are clear and great pictures to help you!
This is my second TRX-4 I use the Blazer body and it is amazing
See "IMPORTANT" below.
I am completely new to this hobby, new as in "I've never touched an RC car before." But after watching videos I got interested and decided to build this kit and learn. I found the instructions mostly easy to follow. There are a couple of minor errors in the instructions, there was one tiny piece missing. I figured out how to build the kit in spite of the errors and Traxxas rapidly took care of the missing part. My advice to anyone else who is as amateur as I am/was is to check EVERY screw for size. The differences may only be a millimeter or two, so they look **almost** alike but that millimeter or two makes a huge difference in getting the crawler put together right. All total I spent about ten hours building the chassis. Probably someone experienced who is not being constantly interrupted could do it much faster, but who cares, I got it together and it works. When I wrote that part, I hadn't tried to mate the chassis with the body.
IMPORTANT: Mating the chassis to the body is a significant problem due to misinformation from Traxxas. The Traxxas web site for this kit says you'll need a "TRX-4 compatible body." Okay, so I ordered the TRA8111 pickup truck body. How much more standard can you get? It's gotta fit, right? WRONG. It won't fit UNLESS you ALSO buy different body mounts and had the foresight to order and install the narrow fender kit. And you don't discover this until you try to mount the body -- because it's not in the instructions, either. I didn't discover the problem until the entire chassis kit was built. I had to order new body mounts (you need two front mounts) but I refused to disassemble my work and pay another $18 for narrow fenders, so I've just spent a couple of hours cutting back the edges off the fenders provided in the kit. Now it fits okay but it's not very professional and it was totally avoidable if Traxxas had just revealed this information anywhere. In addition, the spare tire kit you can buy will not work with this kit. For some reason the rear bumper provided in the kit won't work with the spare tire kit. I've ordered bumpers that will fit, but that's another unexpected $14 expense for no good reason.
If the standard #8111 pickup truck body isn't compatible with this kit, what Traxxas body is? I still don't know. And that's why I'm knocking down my rating on this model.
Love this thing. The defender is about same price now with a body. But I really liked putting it together seeing how things work. I got a sport body and light kit on it now and batteries last awhile.
Of all the kits I have ever assembled, this was hands down my most favorite build. This rig quickly became my favorite and I was shocked at the impressive performance from the stock tires/foams (although I did put them on beadlocks)
Overall, best bang for the buck
Literally the worse rc I've ever owned. I was so excited to get it, but when it came time to assemble, nothing went together right. I now have a umg10 and bomber and they are much better
Great features for a stock vehicle, but from a build standpoint it has been a complete disaster. I understand that it's meant to be built but some of the issues were enough to completely stop the build until parts could be ordered in. Will not be buying Traxxas again.
Front axle included wrong sized portal axle pins, missing 2 screws from chassis bag, battery tray holes are 1/8" off when the opposite side is installed, springs are supposed to be color coded based on front/rear and have no markings, servos are misaligned and specifically said "DO NOT ADJUST", missing one bearing but have extra of unneeded size, and shock oil container hole for spout too small and had to be bored out.
I got this kit, and couldn't get past bag one, (dead serious on my life, bag ONE!) the 24t output gear and the bearing DO NOT fit, which I guess is a common problem with this kit. So a roll of bearings ($10)and the ridiculous $14 gear, and after a week, I can start again, but wait...One of the tiny servos wasn't centered.... So I moved it back, WASTED the servo with very little force on the servo "saver". So now another week of waiting while this POS lays in parts.... Then I get to fix that with MORE money spent, only to find out that the kit version is DIFFERENT than the RTR. The shock towers are integrated into the wheel wells forcing you to use them or seriously cut them up to fit your body, so then I had to spend MORE money to get shock towers..... All in all, the kit version SUCKS!! Like all things Traxxas, make sure you get it RTR and "working" already, otherwise the money you THOUGHT you saved was in vain. I have said it time and time again, I will never buy Traxx-Ass again. Then when I call Traxxas to get replacements, they say, "oh that's no big deal" So I said, "not making it past bag one, and this kit sitting here in a box week after week, brand new and doesn't work out of the box. that IS A BIG DEAL". Get it RTR, the only thing it doesn't come with is a body. You will be much better off with it pre-built.
