It took me a while to get a chance to write a review for the Losi Rock Rey. Because I was too busy running it every chance I got. I really abused it and never had a problem. It's still running strong. It is huge it looks like it is closer to 1/8 scale than 1/10 scale. I would recommend this to anybody looking for a rock racer. The only thing I would change is the servo to a stronger one. Everything else is great!!!. This was my first order with AMAIN HOBBIES and won't be the last. They are great!! They gave me free stickers and a can cooler with their logo. I really appreciate that. I have shopped at another online store for 20 plus years and never even got a sticker. They have great shipping and great support. I can't say enough of how good they are. I will shop there for many years to come. Thank You Amain Hobbies!!!
This is such a cool and strong Rc truck. Powerful with 3s and can handle a ton of hard beatings. My friend and I each bought one at the same time and we have jumped, launched, and crashed the living hell out of them and they haven’t broke. We actually go out and try to break something and can’t. Except for the body..these trucks keep up with the durability of our xmaxx’s. We’ve had them for about 8 months and no issues besides a bearing and the body’s have gotten beat up. But we’re still using the same one. We both also have the Baja Rey and that truck is freakin sweet too! My next truck from losi will be the new buggy. Very very highly recommend this truck to anyone! Great job losi! If you are into Rc cars this one is a MUST have. Between the 2 of us we have 14 Rc trucks and the losi’s Are the favorites.
I'm very happy with this truck. It's a very realistic driving experience and super fun to bash. I have owned a ton of Rc's and I have to say this is firmly in my top 5 Rc's I would recommend.
This is a big tenth scale rig with lots of speed and torque. Fit and finish are great. The led lights are very bright and look cool. The servo horn is junk so do your self a favor and buy a 23t losi metal servo arm right away. The stock one strips out right away. This is a tuff rig to work on with the screw on body, roll bars, and plastic driver its tuff to get to the servo but very do able with some added time. I took out the driver and his buddy and left them out so I can see whats going on in there, and so I can rinse it out to keep it clean in there after driving it. Its also very tippy on pavement when turning fast. if you buy some stadium truck wheels and tires it will do well on pavement. But that being said it is a rock racer and the sticky soft tires work great for what they are designed for. This is a very tuff and well built machine excluding the servo arm of course. Its a blast to drive and worth the cash.
bought my rock rey brand new getting into R/C cars this last week. so far, i love it. built very well and well thought out. the only thing i dont like is the small battery compartment. it has the removable piece to be able to fit a larger battery but youd better check the manual first. other than that so far so good, im going to try and set the ESC for lower power and see how much better it crawls. ALSO this car is perfect for anyone that just wants a car thats good for all types of use and terrain & that can handle a beating.
Somewhat new to RC but I'm very impressed with this rock basher. I'm running a 3's 5000mah 50c Lipo and this thing is an absolute beast. Like I said new so wasn't sure what to expect but I have jumped, smashed, rolled, abussed this thing pretty hard and I feel it's holding up tremendously for what I've put it through this far. The only thing that has broke is a shock rod end cap stripped out so I ordered a new one but like I said I'm not easy on my stuff I drive it like it's meant to be driven and I fix ithings when they break (if you ain't breaking stuff you ain't doing anything cool) cause eventually something will. But gosh dang this thing is fun and tough as shit, well worth it.
Awesome rig to go along with my lasernut u4! I've speed tested it and it goes about the same speed as the lasernut does! The rear diff came locked. There's so many parts that can be upgraded to aluminum. Only draw back in my opinion is that the roll cage take alot of screws to remove whereas the tenacity models just lift off and have retaining clips.order a better servo when you checkout
Fun as hell not a bank account killer and for what you get it’s super fast runs great perfect Offroad truck for the price and quality
The Rock Rey is a great truck if you're willing to put in the time and money to upgrade it. Unfortunately it's also extremely fragile stock on a 3S battery.
Here's a list of a few of the things that have broken on mine over the last six months:
- Front A-Arm (broke within hours of unboxing the truck)
- Lower Shock Absorber mount (twice)
- One Tire (developed a massive gash after a drag race)
- Front Bumper
- Center diff output shaft
- Stock servo
- Camber link
- Steering link (replacement is on the verge of breaking too, there is no aluminum upgrade, and to get a new one you have to buy the entire bellcrank with it, though this is relatively cheap)
Furthermore, the stock steering is *awful*. I believe Losi when they say the truck can do 40 mph out of the box, but I doubt you'll hit anything close to that speed in a racing situation without AVC, because the steering is so poor. This is thanks to a combination of the stock servo and the plastic steering rack. Out of the box my Rock Rey didn't even drive straight at low speeds without dramatic trim adjustments, and the steering was so unpredictable at speed that any trim adjustments were useless.
In other words, an aluminum bellcrank set from Losi, Hot Racing, or Exotek is a must have upgrade.
Ironically, the one part of the truck that hasn't broken yet is the servo horn. There are a lot of stories from 2017 of the plastic horn becoming stripped; but since then Losi has corrected this issue by adding a metal insert to the horn. An aluminum servo horn is still a great upgrade to the Rock Rey to improve the steering, however. But beware, clamping servo horns like Amain's Protek brand have a big clamp in the back that will hit your servo mount; buy the Losi brand horn or a lower profile horn such as Vanquish's.
However, with the addition of an aluminum steering set, the Rock Rey is a fantastic vehicle. The center diff lets it turn on a dime, even with the stock servo. In my experience the internals are very tough; when I opened up the truck to replace the diff oil a few weeks ago it seemed like a waste of time; the gears were totally pristine.
A few other pieces of advice about upgrades:
- The body has a very nicely designed system that lets you insert a battery without removing the body at all. This system involves fixing the ESC's battery connector to the body through a hole. That hole seems to only fit Dynamite EC3 battery connectors; even an EC3 from Spektrum won't fit in it. Something to keep in mind if you upgrade the ESC
- RPM's A-Arms are excellent and greatly reduced the rate of breakages in the front.
- There's a reason why Losi included aluminum upper links and an aluminum mount in the (now discontinued) Rock Rey Kit: they really help the handling
- The hardware that comes with this kit is very bad and will easily strip if you use allen keys. Invest in a set of high quality drivers; Protek's are excellent
- The motor shaft of the 550 motor that comes with the Rock Rey is very large. If you try to use a 540 motor (and many popular recommendations are for Castle or Holmes Hobbies 540 motors), you will probably need a new pinion, or a shaft sleeve.
I used this truck primarily to race against a cousin with an Arma Typhon, and to do some crawling in stream beds. It's a competent crawler stock, but is easily outclassed by locked diff vehicles like the Gmade GOM, and I doubt it could compete with a serious crawler like a SCX10. The front is too low, and its long, flat belly easily gets caught on taller rocks. Stock, most of the weight is towards the back.
It was completely demolished by $150 cheaper Typhon on any flat terrain, but in the rough terrain of a forest floor it comes into its own, easily rolling over roots, mud and other debris that would stop a buggy in its tracks.
Excellent quality, fun and durable. Very impressed with this.
it is the beast !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! it really is the best
I Love my new Losi Rock Rey, I want to order the Baja Rey BND next. Will my Transmitter work with it?
Truck is awesome. Great speed decent handling. Tires are super soft so it’s wise to take turns at much less speeds. Even on dirt I find it har to turn at semi-high speeds. Haven’t had much problems with the servo, before I bought this RTR I seen a lot a negative comments on the servo but have ran into those problems yet. Not really much of upgrades need to be done out the box. I then to to look stock but with minor upgrades to parts that break along the way.
No cool Losi stickers in the box, dang? Was concerned about durability. Not an issue, steering horn survived two battery packs and all I could dish out without failure. Truly my new favorite RC. I love it
